Searches for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) are being spearheaded by scientists at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California. The efforts have concentrated on searches for radio transmissions that could be artificial in origin, and have used various large radio telescopes around the world. This option is familiar also from fictional depictions such as Carl Sagan's Contact (in which it generally pays off). But radio is not the only conceivable channel narrow-beamed lasers could span interstellar distances with a modest power consumption.We already have the technology, if we so wish, to proclaim our presence many light-years away by either of these methods; indeed, the combined effects of all radio transmitters, radars and so forth would in any case reveal us to any aliens with sensitive radio telescopes. We know so little about the origin and potentialities of life that it is hard to assess what method for detecting it is best. So it is sensible to use every available technique and be alert to all possibilities. But we should be mindful of 'observational selection': even if we do discover something, we can't infer that it is 'typical', because our instruments and techniques restrict us to detecting a biased and incomplete selection of what may actually be out there.
There may be no other intelligent life elsewhere. Even if there is, it may be on some water-covered world where super-dolphins enjoy a contemplative oceanic life, doing nothing to reveal themselves. There are heavy odds against success, but systematic scans for artificial signals are a worthwhile gamble because of the philosophical import of any detection / Page 24 / A manifestly artificial signal- even if it were as boring as lists of prime numbers, or the digits of 'pi' - would imply that 'intelli-gence' wasn't unique to the Earth and had evolved elsewhere. The nearest potential sites are so far away that signals would take many years in transit. For this reason alone, transmission would be primarily one-way. There would be time to send a measured response, but no scope for quick repartee!
Any remote beings who could communicate with us would have some concepts of mathematics and logic that paralleled our own. And they would also share a knowledge of the basic particles and forces that govern our universe. Their habitat may be very different (and the biosphere even more different) from ours here on Earth; but they, and their planet, would be made of atoms just like those on Earth. For them, as for us, the most important particles would be protons and electrons: one electron orbiting a proton makes a hydrogen atom, and electric currents and radio transmitters involve streams of electrons. A proton is 1,836 times heavier than an electron, and the number 1,836 would have the same connotations to any 'intelligence' able and motivated to transmit radio signals. All the basic forces and natural laws would be the same. Indeed, this uniformity - without which our universe would be a far more baffling place - seems to extend to the remotest galaxies that astronomers can study. (Later chapters in this book will, however, speculate about other 'universes', forever beyond range of our telescopes, where different laws may prevail.)
Clearly, alien beings wouldn't use metres, kilograms or seconds. But we could exchange information about the ratios of two masses (such as the ratio of proton and electron masses) or of two lengths, which are 'pure numbers' that don't depend on what units are used: the statement that one rod is ten times as long as another is true (or false) whether we measure / Page 25 / lengths in feet or metres or some alien units. As Richard Feynman noted, he could tell extraterrestrials that he was 'seventeen billion hydrogen atoms high' and they should understand him.
Some 'intelligences' could exist with no intellectual affinity to us whatsoever. But any beings who transmitted a signal to us must have achieved some mastery over their physical surroundings. If they had any powers of reflection, they would surely share our curiosity about the cosmic 'genesis event' from which we've all emerged. They would be likely to be interested in how our universe is structured into stars and galaxies, what it contains, how it is expanding, and its eventual destiny. These things would be part of the common culture that we would share with any aliens. They would note, as we do, that a few key numbers are crucial to our shared cosmic environment.
Six of these numbers are the theme of the present book. They determine key features of our universe: how it expands; whether planets, stars and galaxies can form; and whether there can be a 'chemistry' propitious for evolution. Moreover, the nature of our universe is remarkably sensitive to these numbers. If you imagine setting up a universe by adjusting six dials, then the tuning must be precise in order to yield a universe that could harbour life. Is this providence? Is it coincidence? Are these numbers the outcome of a 'theory of everything' that uniquely fixes them? None of these interpre-tations seems compelling. Instead, I believe that the apparent 'tuning' intimates something even more remarkable: that our observable universe - all we can see out to the limits of our telescopes - is just one pan of an ensemble, among which there is even a diversity of physical laws. This is speculation, but it is compatible with the best theories we have.

We know that there are planets orbiting other stars, just as the Earth orbits our own star, the Sun. We may wonder what habitats they offer. Is their gravity too weak to retain an atmosphere? Are they too hot, too cold, or too dry to harbour life? Probably only a few offer an environment conducive for life. So, on a much grander scale, there may be innumerable other universes that we cannot observe because light from them can never reach us. Would they be propitious for the kind of evolution that has happened on at least one planet around at least one star in our 'home' universe? In most of them, the six numbers could be different: only a few universes would then be 'well tuned' for life. We should not be surprised that, in our universe, the numbers seem providentially tuned, any more than we should be surprised to find ourselves on a rather special planet whose gravity can retain an atmosphere, where the temperature allows water to exist, and that is orbiting a stable long-lived star.

Message in a Bottle?

Together with the ancient texts and rituals that are linked to them, could the vast monuments of the Giza necropolis have been designed to transmit a message from one culture to another - a message not across space, but across time?
Egyptologists reply to such questions by rolling their eyes and hooting derisively, Indeed they would not be 'Egyptologists' (or at any rate they could not long remain within that profession) if they reacted with anything other than scorn and disbelief to suggestions that the necropolis might be more than a cemetery, that the Great Sphinx might significantly predate the epoch of 2500 BC, and that the Pyramids might not be just 'royal tombs', By the same token, no self-respecting Egyptologist would be prepared to consider, even for a moment, the outlandish possibility that some sort of mysterious 'message' might have been encoded into the monuments.
So whom should we turn to for advice when confronted by what we suspect may be a message from a civilization so far distant from us in time as to be almost unknowable?
Anti-cipher
The only scientists actively working on such problems today are those involved in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence - SETI for / Page253 / short. They endlessly sweep the heavens for messages from distant civilizations and they have therefore naturally had to give some thought to what might happen if they ever did identify such a message. According to Dr Philip Morisson of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology:
To begin with we would know very little about it. If we received it we would not understand what we're getting. But we would have an unmistakable signal, full of structure, full of challenge. The best people would try to decode it, and it will be easy to do because those who have constructed it would have made it easy to decode, otherwise there's no point. This is anti-cryptography: 'I want to make a message for you, who never got in touch with any symbols of mine, no key no clue, nevertheless you'll be able to read it . . .' I would have to fill it full of clues and unmistakable clever devices. . .1..."

"...In his book, Cosmos, Professor Carl Sagan of Cornell University makes much the same point - and does so, curiously enough, with reference to the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic system. He explains that the 'Egyptian hieroglyphics are, in significant part, a simple substitution cipher. But not every hieroglyph is a letter or syllable. Some are pictographs. . .' When it came to translation, this 'mix of letters and pictographs caused some grief for interpreters. . .' In the early nineteenth century, however, a breakthrough was made by the French scholar Champollion who deciphered the famous 'Rosetta Stone', a slab of black basalt bearing identical inscriptions in Egyptian hieroglyphics and in Greek. Since Champollion could read the Greek, all he needed was some kind of 'key' to relate specific hieroglyphs to specific Greek words or letters. This key was provided by the constant repetition in the Greek text of the name of Pharaoh Ptolemy V and an equal number of repetitions in the Egyptian text of a distinctive oblong enclosure - known as a cartouche - containing a repeated group of hieroglyphs..."

The cartouches were the key. . . almost as though the Pharaohs of Egypt had circled their own names to make the going easier for Egyptologists two thousand years in the future. . . What a joy it must have been [for Champollion] to open this one-way communication channel with another civilization, to permit a culture that had been / Page 254 / mute for millennia to speak of its history, magic, medicine, religion, politics and philosophy!
Professor Sagan then offers a comparison that is highly apposite to our present inquiry. 'Today,' he says:
we are again seeking messages from an ancient and exotic civilization, this time hidden from us not only in time, but in space. If we should receive a radio message from an extraterrestrial civilization, how could it possibly be understood? Extraterrestrial intelligence will be elegant, complex, internally consistent and utterly alien. Extraterrestrials would, of course, wish to make a message sent to us as comprehensible as possible. But how could they? Is there in any sense an interstellar Rosetta Stone? We believe there is a common language that all technical civilizations, no matter how different, must have. That common language is science and mathematics. The laws of Nature are the same everywhere:
It seems to us that if there is indeed a very ancient 'message' at Giza then it is likely to be expressed in the language of science and mathematics that Sagan identifies - and for the same reason.
Moreover, given its need to continue 'transmitting' coherently across thousands of years (and chasms of cultural change), we think that the composer of such a message would be likely to make use of the Precession of the Equinoxes, the one particular 'law of Nature' that can be said to govern, and measure - and identify - long periods of terrestrial time.
Durable vehicles
The Pyramids and the Great Sphinx at Giza are, above all else, as elegant, as complex, as internally consistent and as utterly 'alien' as the extraterrestrial intelligence that Sagan envisages (alien in the sense of the tremendous, almost superhuman scale of these structures and of their uncanny - and in our terms apparently unnecessary - precision).
Moreover, returning briefly to Dr Philip Morisson's remarks quoted earlier, we think that the Giza necropolis also qualifies rather well for the description 'packed full of clues and unmistakable clever devices'! Indeed, it seems to us that a truly astonishing quantum of.."

1. the creation of durable, unequivocal markers which could serve as beacons to inflame the curiosity and engage the intelligence of future generations of seekers;
2. the use of the 'common language' of precessional astronomy;
3. the use of precessional co-ordinates to signal specific time- referents linking past to present and present to future;
4. Cunningly concealed store-rooms, or 'Halls of Records' that could only be found and entered by those who were fully initiated in the 'silent language' and thus could read and follow its clues.
In addition, though the monuments are enabled to 'speak' from the moment that their astronomical context is understood, we have also to consider the amazing profusion of funerary texts that have come down to us from all periods of Egyptian history - all apparently emanating from the same very few common sources5 As we have seen, these texts operate like 'software' to the monuments' 'hardware', charting the route that the Horus-King (and all other future seekers) must follow.
We recall a remark made by Giorgio de Santillana and Hertha von Dechend in Hamlet's Mill to the effect that the great strength of myths as vehicles for specific technical information is that they are capable of transmitting that information independently of the knowledge of individual story-tellers.6 In other words as long as a myth continues to be told true, it will also continue to transmit any higher message that may be concealed within its structure - even if neither the teller nor the hearer understands that message.
So, too, we suspect, with the ancient Egyptian funerary texts. We would be surprised if the owners of many of the coffins and tomb walls onto which they were copied had even the faintest inkling that specific astronomical observations and directions were being dupli-cated at their expense. What motivated them was precisely what the texts offered - the lure of immortal life. Yet by taking that lure did they not in fact guarantee a kind of immortality for the texts themselves? Did they not ensure that so many faithful copies would / Page 256 / be made that some at least would be bound to survive for many thousands of years?
We think that there were always people who understood the true 'science of immortality' connected to the texts, and who were able to read the astronomical allegories in which deeper secrets, not granted to the common herd, lay concealed. We presume that these people were once called the 'Followers of Horus', that they operated as an invisible college behind the scenes in Egyptian prehistory and history, that their primary cult centre was at Giza-Heliopolis, and that they were responsible for the initiation of kings and the realization of blueprints. We also think that the timetables they worked to - and almost everything of significance that they did - was in one way or another written in the stars."

" I found some more interesting facts in a, pamphlet written 1n 1972 by a Mr G. Patrick Flanagan, Ph.D., on "The Pyramid and its Relationship to Biocosmic Energy", Mr Flanagan was cited in two pages for his scientific and inventive genius, some years ago, in a Life magazine article which named 100 of the most important young people in the United States in govern-ment, science, space, business, education, religion and the arts. They were called "the takeover generation".
Mr Flanagan states that the Great Pyramid of Giza is a powerful source of biocosmic energy. He calls this particular field of science- Magnetic Form Resonance and says that his research results confirm that the energy is of a special magnetic nature-the forces that bind the universe together. Energies of microcosmic levels may be tuned in with microcosmic devices such as the pyramid.. "The pyramid generates millimicrowave or nanowave radiation by the simple fact that it has five corners -the four base corners plus the apex. The corners are in effect a type of nanowave radiator. The radiation from the molecules or the atoms of matter in the pyramid combine by the angles of the corners into a beam which bisects the angles and transmits a beam of this radiation towards the centre of the pyramid. The molecules or atoms of this area absorb these energies by reson-ance. As the energy increases, the electron orbits start to expand. As more energy is absorbed more expansion occurs. There would be a point at which, if there were too much energy absorbed, the atoms would disintegrate, and the electrons / Page 86 / would fly off, but the energy required for this would be far more than the pyramid could concentrate. As the energy increases there is an increase in circulation and finally there is a highly saturated energy atmosphere in the wave bands around 10 nanometers. The energy would also radiate outwards from the, corners of the pyramid." A further interesting comment was found in the preface to the third edition of Davidson and Aldersmith's book on the Great Pyramid. The religious symbolism of the displacement factor (the "hollowing-in" of the sides of the pyramid during construc-tion) was discussed as follows: "This aspect of the structural allegory throws a flood of light upon an element of the scriptural allegory that clearly refers to the completion of 'all the building' . . . 'unto the measure of the fullness of the stature', required by the design. This concerns the symbolic '144000 . . . redeemed from among men. . . without fault before the throne of God' (Rev XIV, 1-5); 'Living stones' . . . without flaw for the perfect casing."
It is the symbolic 144000 that appears to have great signifi-ance in the ancient writings and it is interesting to note that this particular value has been connected in some way by other researchers to the enigma of the Great Pyramid. Considering that the angular velocity of light value in grid seconds is also 144000, as postulated in other sections of this book, it is obvious to me that the structure is in fact a measure of light, and by applying this value it should be possible to solve the mathemati-cal puzzle which has been handed down to us.
After studying all this information, and volumes of other writ-ings on the Great Pyramid, I felt I was at the stage where, by careful analysis, a complete breakdown of the structure could possibly be achieved in terms of light, gravity and mass har-monics. I finally succeeded in accomplishing what I set out to do after a few weeks of work on a twelve-digit electronic calculator, although the approach to the problem was not, as straight- forward as I had expected it to be. I present the solution as a purely theoretical one at this stage as I obviously cannot check the original structure to prove that my values are the correct ones. Hopefully, a very thorough scientific check will be carried out in the future by the Arab states.

I was surprised to find during my delving, into all the writings I could find on the Pyramid that the measurements taken by each scientific expedition sent to probe the structure differed to a remarkable degree. The cause of this was mainly due to the fact that most of the outer casing stones have been stripped off over the years in order to construct other buildings around Cairo. Also, the top few feet of the Pyramid are missing, thus making it difficult to ascertain the exact completed dimensions. There is also the sneaking suspicion that some of the measurements were engineered to fit some pet theory. (I acknowledge that I also could be accused of this, but will set forth my theoretical set of measurements and await further scientific analysis in the future by independent groups to either confirm or deny my conclusions.)
The measurements 1 finally settled on after a series of calcula-tions and hours, of study fall very close to some of the different values laid down by the various other researchers, so I feel that mine are just as likely to be valid as theirs-more so, in fact, as the basis I used was purely geometric and associated directly with the harmonic of the angular velocity of light.
Some of the various measurements found by others are:
Colonel Howard Vyse, son of General Richard Vyse, found a base side length of 764 British feet, and a casing stone angle of 51051 '.
Frenchmen Coutelle and Le Pere found a base side length of 763.62 British feet. By using the casing stone angle of 51 O51' and the French base length of 763.62 feet, a theoretical height of 485.5 feet was calculated, assuming a special base-side to height ratio. From the book The Source of Measures by Skinner, the height as calculated by Professor P. Smyth (see Our Inheritance in the Great Pyramid) approximates a value of 486 feet 2 inches. Another calculation in this book gives a height of 486 British feet and a base side of 763.407 feet. In The Great Pyramid-Its Divine Message by D. Davidson and H. Aldersmith, various values are given: base 754.916 feet; height 484.416 feet-base 754.916 feet, height 480.833 feet-base 760.916, height 484.416 feet.
I decided to calculate my theoretical pyramid by assuming a square base with a diagonal of exactly 1080 geodetic, or grid,

A. One geodetic foot is equal to 1/600 of one minute of arc on the earth's surface.

I had already discovered via the Pythagoras right-angled 3, 4, 5 triangle that the harmonic of light and the harmonic of a circle are interlocked. With this diagonal the base side was 763.675303 geodetic feet. The area of enclosed base was found to be 583,200 square feet. . . .
" Progress so far looked very promsing. As 5832 is equal to the number of inches in 486 feet it appeared that the height of the Pyramid in inches was harmonically equal to the area of the base in square feet. I decided to assume the values of 763.675303 feet base side and 486 feet height and carryon the probe to see what I could make of it. The next step was to find if there was any connection with the light harmonic of 144 or the reciprocal harmonic of 6944. I eventually found a base side to height ratio of 11:7 which appeared to be derived from very close practical multiples of the harmonic reciprocals of light.

The ratio could have a direct association with the mathemati-cal sequence named the "Fibonacci series". The sequence is named after the Italian mathematician Leonardo of Pisa, who was known by his patronymic Fibonacci. In the series each term after the second being the sum of the two next proceeding terms. Thus 3 + 5 = 8; 5 + 8 = 13; and so on. An interesting fact / Page 92 / about the series is that 1 and 144 are the only terms that are a perfect square. Also the sum of any ten consecutive terms in a Fibonacci series is exactly eleven times greater than the seventh term.
Another interesting fact in connection with this series is that it produces the ratio which is known as the golden section or "phi" (Ø ). This is obtained by dividing anyone term of the summation series by its predecessor. The higher the terms the closer to the ratio of phi which is taken as 1.618. This value will be shown to have significance in the construction of the King's Chamber. The diagonals of the sacred five-pointed star divide each other by this ratio and the same proportions have been found to occur throughout nature.
The base measurements of the Pyramid were the most difficult to calculate. Although I had decided on a base diagonal of 1080 geodetic feet which gave the value of 763.675303 geodetic feet for each base side from corner to corner, I now had to find the true measure of the base perimeter. This is altered considerably by the hollowing-in effect of the four sides. Weeks of trial and error on the calculator resulted in a base design which I feel is most likely to be similar to the original.
The clue to this problem was the so-called displacement factor of the Pyramid as given in the book by Davidson and Alder-smith. All sorts of occult reasons have been given for the dis-placement but there was no doubt as to its importance as it is built geometrically into many areas of the Pyramid. It is, for instance, the measurement of the north to south vertical axial plane of the Pyramid's passage system eastwards from the north to south central vertical plane of the Pyramid.
The values given, as measured by Professor Petrie, are as follows:
Entrance door on north face = 287.0 + - 0.8 British inch
Entrance passage end in natural rock = 286.4 + - 1.0 British inch
Beginning of ascending passage = 286.6 + - 0.8 British inch
End of ascending passage = 287.0 + - 1.5 British inch
Due to the distortions in the Pyramid caused by the passage of time, the measurements are naturally slightly inaccurate, but / Page 93 diagram 14 omitted / Page 94 / by correlating all the knowledge I now had I felt it safe to assume that the original measurement used by the architects was 288 geodetic inches, which would be a direct harmonic of twice the speed of light, or 2C.

If the Pyramid had been constructed on the full base area, without hollowing, and f'ull base-side length of 763.675303 feet, then the actual mass of the structure in cubic feet would have been 94,478,400. The mass loss due to the hollowing of each of the sides is, in modem times, a very difficult value to calculate, because almost all of the outer casing stones have been removed and only the inner core now remains. There is nothing left to show the outer shape of the original Pyramid to any degree of accuracy. We can now only speculate as to the original mass, but with the mathematical clues presented to us it may be possible to calculate an acceptable value. I believe that the original mass was engineered in such a way that the whole structure would resonate at a harmonic value tuned to the smallest particle of physical matter: the electron. If we assume then, that the original mass of the Pyramid was 92,418,400 cubic feet (geodetic) giving a mass loss of 2,060,000 cubic feet, an interestillg series of values becomes evident.

I applied various combinations of this harmonic and eventually found that if the base was inset by 57.6 inches the problem was partly solved, 57.6 being 28.8 x 2.This was not a simple process as I had to calculate the length of this inset portion on each side of the base and only a few original casing stones of the Pyramid remain, leaving few clues. By continual calculation, and gradually lengthening and shortening this portion of the base, I finally discovered a value for length which in itself is quite remarkable.
The full base width is 763.675303 geodetic feet and I found the hollowed-in portion to be harmonically associated with this value. The base width could be broken up into three harmonic-ally associated parts as follows:

I was amazed that such a complicated number could be broken down so accurately into smaller segments which were harmonically similar. This fact alone convinced me that I was on the right track as I could not have invented a number like this in a thousand years, and further calculation eventually led me to a final base pattern as shown in Diagram 12.( Diagram omitted) The construction values used to form the hollowing effect at base level were all derivatives of the 288 harmonic, being 345.6 inches equal to 28.8 feet; 57.6 inches equal to twice 28.8 inches; and 288 inches.
The completed base plan showed that the measurement of the full perimeter was 36,694 geodetic inches.
I was now convinced that all the geometric measurements of the Pyramid were tuned harmonically one with the other, and I could only be satisfied with the results if this was evident, and in all its parts.

Page 95 The volume enclosed by the pyramid had it been constructed on the full square base, would have been 94,478,400 cubic feet in geodetic measure. The fact that the base sides were hollowed in suggested to me that the actual mass of the Pyramid had been engineered in such a way as to cause the whole structure to be harmonically tuned to some basic value connected with matter itself.
The search for this particular value was a lengthy one and the clue that led me finally to a possible solution was a study of the construction of the Grand Gallery. The height of the Gallery was the first indication that it was not just an elaborate access passage. Previous measurements made by scientific investigators pointed to some interesting possibilities. Slight buckling caused by the massive weight of the Pyramid above, settling over thousands of years, has now resulted in the ceiling of the cham-ber having an uneven surface. The present mean height was found to be 339.2 British inches, while heights taken at various individual points were 333.9 to 346 inches.
Equating the results I had obtained from all the other aspects of the structure, I am certain that the original height of the chamber was 345.6 geodetic inches, which gives a value of 28.8 feet. The height of the chamber was obviously equivalent to the harmonic of 288, or twice the speed of light. If it was in fact a cavity resonator, as I now suspected, then the length and all the other measurements should show indications of harmonics. The value that I calculated for length was extremely close to that.of the one published in Davidson and Aldersmith's book, their value being 1836 inches, and my theoretical value 1833,46 geodetic inches.
A considerable amount of time was required to calculate a satisfactory value for the length of the Gallery. I eventually found that the amount of hollowing-in at the base provided the ,clue. If 57.6 (the amount in inches by which the base is inset) is divided by pi or 3.1415927, the resulting value is 18.334649. The harmonic equivalent of 1833.46 when applied to Gallery length would ensure that the wave-forms set up in the cavity were finely tuned to light frequencies.
A search of my physics books revealed that 1836 was the closest approximation the scientists have calculated to the mass / Page 96 (Diagram 15 omitted) Page 97 / ratio of the positive hydrogen ion, i.e. the proton, to the electron. if we dare to assume that the value of 1833.46 is the true geometric ratio then the wave-forms in the Gallery will also have a harmonic affinity with the structure of the atom, the building block of the universe itself. Pressing on with this train of thought I again consulted a book on atomic physics and found that the mass of the electron is given as 9.2 x 10-31 kilo-grammes. I believe that, according to the clues presented by the Pyramid, the true value of electron mass, in the harmonic sense, could be taken as a standard of 9.24184 x 10-31 kilo- grammes.
If this harmonic mass value is multiplied by 1833.46, the proposed mass ratio of the proton and electron, we have
9.24184 )( 1833.46 = 16944.5
This appears perfectly logical to me, as a value of 16944 for the proton mass harmonic would lay the basis for a complete harmonic scale for the atomic table of elements. This has been demonstrated in .another chapter.
I can almost hear the shouts of anguish from the scientific community, so I hasten to add that I set up these proposals only for discussion and experiment. I am sure that natural law is not a haphazard affair and that harmony is maintained throughout all physical processes.
The recess in the floor at the bottom end of the Gallery over the access passage to the Queen's Chamber also indicates a connec- tion with the harmonic of light frequency. The length of the recess is given as 263.8 British inches in Aldersmith and David-son's book. I believe that a very accurate check will show that this recess is 263.523 geodetic inches, which would equal the square root of the harmonic of the reciprocal of light. which is 694444. Investigators have been intrigued by the strange reson-ances in the chamber from any sounds made within it. Other measurements I have checked indicate a harmonic association with time. A complete book would be necessary to explore all the mathematical complexities of the passages and chambers to demonstrate how the structure has been engineered to produce harmonic wave-forms tuned to all the natural laws. I point out only a few of them to indicate the goldmine of information /Page 98 (Diagram 16 omitted) Page 99 awaiting those who would carry out more extensive research.
Davidson and Aldersmith go to great lengths in their book to refute the idea that the Pyramid was constructed as a tomb and that it was built to serve some other purpose.
The direct proof against a tombic theory is an engineering proof, and a definitely convincing engineering proof. The first ascending passage which leads from the entrance or descend- ing passage into all the inner passages and chambers of the Pyramid, was, and is, closed by a tightly fitting granite plug or block at its lower or entering end. According to the exponents of the tombic theory, this plug was retained loose in the Grand Gallery or elsewhere in the Pyramid's upper system, until the death of the king. The mummy case, it is alleged, was tben dragged up the ascending passages and deposited in the King's Chamber: after which the granite plug was released and permitted to slide down from the Grand Gallery into the first ascending passage to its lower end. Here according to the theory it came to rest, tightly wedged in, impossible to remove except by quarrying. In this position it effectively sealed access to the upper passages and chambers. There the plug still remains, sealing the access, and entrance to the first ascending passage behind the plug is gained only by means of Al Mamoun's quarried shaft, which was excavated about AD 800.
Now the peculiar fact concerning this plug is that it would fit just as tightly the depth of the upper end of the passage as it does the lower. Any engineer, architect or constructional operative knows that it is impossible to slide or push a block of stone, however smoothly dressed and accurately squared, along a passage, after the passage has been completely con-structed, if the block fits the passage tightly. It is a matter of experience in such circumstances that the block will jam in the passage unless it has at least three quarters of an inch clear-ance all round. . . It is therefore obvious that the first ascending passage was plugged as soon as the building of it began. . . . From this it is certain that the first ascending passage and the upper passages and chambers were not intended for any contemporary purpose, that they were not intended for the transit and reception of the royal or any other mummy, and that the Great Pyramid was not built as a tomb."

"One evening when everything seemed perfect, I went to Namata with high hopes. I was certain the flash would appear, and it probably did, but I was thwarted by having the sun set directly into the tiny crater of Chuchu, the little granddaughter cone out on the far edge of the atoll.
About ten days later the conditions again were ideal and I went up once more, expecting to find that the earth had carried on with its customary seasonal tilt and that the sun would now sink clear to the south of the cone. It did set away from Chuchu and I saw the green flash, but to my surprise the sun was once again touching the horizon north of the little volcano, right back where it had been almost a month earlier. I had forgotten the date.It was early in the new year, we had just passed the southern summer solstice, and our star was returning to the Northern Hemisphere.
From that day on, I kept notes. On the date of the equinox, when day and night were of exactly equal length, the sun set right over a mound on Pulau Pandjang, the longest of the coral keys at the far end of the lagoon. And for several days, when the sun was as far away from Nus Tarian as it could get, I learned that it went down directly behind a tall standing rock called Gigi, the canine in a set of raised coral teeth on the northwestern limit of the reef.
Namata was a giant sundial, a huge rock calculator set like the rear sight on a monumental rifle aimed directly at those points on the horizon where the three most significant events in the solar calendar took place. And at each of those distant points stood one of three landmarks on the reef. The only three conspicuous landmarks on the entire reef, and one of these was man-made.
Atolls make ideal solar observatories. People who live on them have long horizons; they can always see the sun rise and set. And depending on their location on the coral ring, they see
Page 96 / it either coming up or going down against a curved and distant scale graduated by recognisable markers such as palm trees or coral heads. Each observation point has its own set of refer- ences, but every observer has everything necessary for keeping an accurate calendar.
The situation on Nus Tarian was made a little more complex by the fact that a secondary eruption had thrown up a new volcanic outcrop at its eastern end. Nothing was visible from the island that could be used to graduate a sunrise, and the western reefs were scattered and submerged, leaving very few outstanding objects on the horizon for taking sunset bearings. And yet the few that did exist seemed to have been used for this purpose, because someone at some time built a facility at the only spot on the whole island where all the markers would be perfectly aligned.
Namata wasn't just a shrine, a small place for making magic. It was a temple.
Certainly pregnant women could find comfort and reassurance there, but the structure itself was clearly dedicated to some more universal concern. It had cosmic relevance and seemed to be evidence of the early existence on Nus Tarian of a people who understood the mechanics of the Solar System and went to great lengths to affinn their connection with it all.
This kind of concern was once manifest all over the world. I have walked the long, straight solstice lines etched into the Nazca plains of Peru. I have stood and watched the sun rise directly over the avenue at Stonehenge on Midsummer's Day. I have made my own measurements to verify the orientation of the Great Pyramid at Giza.
I am satisfied that all these structures were created by people who possessed an astronomical awareness and a mathematical expertise that we have only recently rediscovered. But I am unhappy with the manic attempts now being made to deify these builders as masters of an arcane and intergalactic order to whom all the secrets of the universe were known.
They were people. Born of this earth and, like all things living here, imbued with a natural sensitivity to its cycles and rhythms.We all have Earth's measure and, given the spiritual freedom to / Page97 / express this heritage, we will inevitably and comfortably produce designs that reflect our origins.
For instance, the majority of all people in all cultures so far tested find the proportions 1:1.6 to be the most pleasing. So it is not surprising to discover that this Golden Mean forms the precise ratio between the height of the Great Pyramid and the
length of its base. And we need not look for an esoteric message hidden in the fact that the relationship of the pyramid's height to the perimeter of its base is the same as that between the radius and the circumference of a circle. These are natural and harmonious proportions illustrated with equal significance by the relationship between the length of Mona Lisa's nose and the spacing of her eyes.
We know that churches in the sixteenth century were deliber- ately planned according to classical musical intervals. It is a fact that the proportions of many Gothic cathedrals correspond to similar harmonics, and it can be demonstrated that the math- ematics of both the music and the architecture can be applied with equal facility to the spatial geometry of our whole Solar System.
They can also be reduced to formulae and arranged in patterns of numbers such as the magic squares that were once a corner- stone of Masonic tradition. We know that these conventions grew from medieval transcendental magic and from the ideas of Hebrew Cabalists and early Christian Gnostics. And it is likely that their beliefs were in turn derived directly from shamanistic origins. There is certainly an almost unbroken line of influence running through all those involved in producing the structures that seem to have such extraordinary cosmic relevance.
I do not for one moment question the relevance, but I am very suspicious of interpretations that turn our monuments into textbooks of cabalistic science, complete with mathematical illustrations of cosmic knowledge, incorporating coded messages from doomed civilisations to the enlightened few of the future.
It is not necessary to stretch everything around us in a desperate attempt to make it fit some elaborate cosmology. There is no need to labour so mightily over abstruse mathemat-ics. To do so is to deny the elegance of nature.

The summit ofWilcrick Hillin Monmouthshire does indeed form the centre of a magnificent geometric spiral of earthwork that covers miles of the Welsh countryside. But the unfolding leaf of an embryonic fern takes on exactly the same natural form with no more or less cosmic significance. The old straight tracks and ley lines of prehistoric Britain were trade routes which also show an unquestionable astronomical alignment. But termites in northern Australia build equally functional nest mounds that happen also to be precisely oriented due north and south without being accused of practising an ancient science of elemental fusion.
There can be no doubt that architects and town planners did use mystical traditions as sources of inspiration. The man who laid out the village of Badminton in England was also an astronomer and a noted Druid scholar, and his design includes streets that fall on solstice lines and avenues that open up vistas to distant steeples. These churches in turn, in accordance with the practice of the early ministry, were built directly on the sites of traditional holy places once marked by pagan temples or ancient rock altars. So today that whole area of Gloucestershire form a vast linked structure of historical, mystical, and astronomical significance.
Any place in which people have lived for any length of time does accumulate relevant form and meaning in this way. Tracing the pedigree back to its origins can be fascinating, but there are dangers inherent in getting. too far involved in esoteric interpretations. Numbers and patterns have an insidious magic of their own which tends to obscure the truth and to divert investigation.

"Another fact pointed out was that of the ventilation shafts provided for the King's and Queen's Chambers. The shafts were not needed during construction and fresh air is of no earthly use to a mummy. The shafts to the Queen's Chamber were not completely cut through the walls until 1872 by a Mr Wayman Dixon and a Dr Grant. The position of one of the shafts was only discovered because of a small crack in the wall and the remaining five inches was cut from the stonework. The position of the other shaft was calculated from the location of the first. They made the statement: "The ventilation shafts were provided for the future, when the Pyramid should be the subject of study by the people of a later civilisation."
The positioning and actual dimensions of the King's and Queen's Chambers indicate direct associations with the har- monics of light, gravity and mass.
The floor level of the Queen's Chamber is 847.2 geodetic inches from the base level of the Pyramid and 847.2 inches from the floor level of the King's Chamber.
847.2 x 2 = 1694.4
The 16944 harmonic is obviously a very important one if I am correct in postulating that atomic structures are built up from resonances associated with this value. Other research I have carried out indicates that this particular harmonic is evident during changes of state in matter. It is evident, for instance, when an element is transformed into the next higher, or lower, one.
The height of the walls above floor level in the Queen's Chamber check out at 182.8 geodetic inches. If 182.8 is divided by 144 (the harmonic of light) the answer we get is 1.26944. The universal harmonic equation, that I discovered in my original work, gives a value of 26944. I have not yet found the significance of the value on the left-hand side of the decimal point, but possibly this indicates a position on the harmonic scale.
The distance from the top of the Chamber walls to the base of the Pyramid is 1030 geodetic inches, which gives a mathematical connection with the dimensions of the King's Chamber. The 2060-inch measurement between the top of the walls and the ceiling of the sub-chamber beneath the Pyramid also mathe-matically associates the chambers.

The most important area is of course the Chamber. For what- ever scientific reason the Pyramid was constructed, the forces built up by the geometric design were, and possibly still are to a certain extent, concentrated at one point in this Chamber. The technical reason for this is still an intriguing mystery and when the puzzle is finally solved I believe the human race will benefit immensely.
The Chamber itself has dimensions of: length 412 geodetic Inches, width 206 geodetic inches, and height of 230.4 geodetic inches. The first amazing fact that I discovered was that the cubic capacity was 19554508.8 cubic inches, which happens to be the cube of the harmonic 2694. The cavity is tuned to the universal equation. The distance from a bottom corner of the Chamber obliquely to an opposite top corner is 515 geodetic inches. A sphere which would enclose the Chamber, with this diameter, would have a circumference with a harmonic value of 1618; the ratio of the golden section.
The values of a Pythagoras triangle, with sides in ratio of 3, 4 and 5, are also built into the Chamber, the dimensions being 515, 412 and 309, with a common factor of 103. I have shown in another section of this book that this particular triangle geo- metrically associates the harmonics of light and the circle.
The position of the stone coffer in the Chamber is probably the most important indication of the scientific reason behind the construction of the Pyramid. Calculations will show that the concentration of natural forces set up by the Pyramid shape are directed towards a point which would be coincidental with the head position of a person reclining in the coffer (see diagrams).
The coffer has been moved slightly from its original resting place, but I found that if it were placed in the position as shown in the diagrams then the head position would be bombarded by wave-forms harmonically tuned to light, mass and gravity.
The point within the coffer is 28.8 geodetic feet from the vertical axis of the Pyramid and -288 geodetic inches displaced from the centreline of the Grand Gallery. The actual focal point of the Pyramid, as a whole, is on the centrai axis, 207.36 geodetic feet from the Pyramid base and 6942 geodetic inches from each base corner. 207.36 is 14.4 squared (144 is the harmonic of the speed of light) and 6942 is the harmonic reciprocal. Page 106 / position within the coffer is on the periphery of the sphere of resonance with a radius of 72 geodetic feet from the Pyramid focal point, the radius of 72 giving a half harmonic of the speed of light.
What can we infer from this? Only if we rebuild the Pyramid shall we ever know. If it were restored to its original condition, would those chosen to spend some time reclining in the stone coffer undergo some change in their conscious state and extend their knowledge of the universe? Would they suddenly find that they could communicate with other intelligences? We may speculate in many different directions but. never be sure.
Another area of research would be the method of setting up resonances within the Pyramid. Did the actual shape cause the matter within to vibrate, or was some artificial means employed? A transmitter tuned to the appropriate wavelengths may have xen employed, but nothing remains within the Pyramid to Indicate that any machinery was employed for the purpose.
While studying the geometric arrangement of all the pyramids on the Giza Plateau I discovered a possible direction of research which might solve the method of activating the structures harmonically. The three main pyramids of Cheops, Chephren and Mykerinos fall on the circumference of a circle which has a diameter of 169.44 seconds of arc. This fact is fairly remarkable when we consider the significance of the 16944 harmonic. Is it possible, therefore, that at the central point of this circle, which is 84.72 seconds of arc (or 1.412 nautical miles) from the pyramids, a building lies hidden beneath the sand which may have housed the transmitting machinery to activate the pyramid complex? A transmitter at this point which broadcast a wave- pattern tuned to the appropriate light frequencies would set up a sphere of resonance which would simultaneously pass through the three pyramids on the periphery. The volume of the sphere, in cubic seconds of arc, when the surface passed through the head position of the coffer in the King's Chamber would be just on 2545600; the harmonic equivalent of half the polar square diagonal of the world grid, as shown in my previous works. (See Diagram 2.)
Is it not worth the diversion of some research grants to expose the probability of this? Billions of dollars are spent on destruc- / Page 108 / tion: would it not be worth one billion to find out our position in relation to the cosmic community? I believe it's worth the gamble. . . .
My research into the pyramid complex is much more detailed than I have demonstrated at this stage, but I do not wish to complicate what so far has remained a reasonably simple explanation of my findings. For instance, the harmonic of time is evident in various combinations throughout the geometry of the Great Pyramid. In my earlier research, much of which I published in my first two books, I established that the geometric of time was based on a 27 period, as against a 24 period for standard time. Grid time is therefore in the ratio of 27 :24 for one revolution of the earth. One grid hour is 8/ 9 ths of one normal hour. The grid hour is then divided into 60 grid minutes and 60 grid seconds. This means that a normal 24-hour period has a time value of 86400 seconds, and the equivalent 27-grid-hour period has a time value of 97,200 grid seconds. The harmonic of time in grid seconds is shown in various ways in the Pyramid structure, the most obvious as follows:
Pyramid height: 5832 geodetic inches, or 486 geodetic feet
Volume of Pyramid without hollowing: 94,478,400 cubic feet
5832 ÷ 60 = 9.72
944784 = 972 x 972
486 x 2 = 972
The other pyramids in the group are also constructed to dimensions which are harmonically associated with light, and the geometric relationships, one with the other, give triangula-tions which are harmonically related to natural forces.
I hope one day to visit the King's Chamber and probe the forces within the structure. If there are scientists in the world who have the vision and curiosity to carry out research along the lines that I have outlined I would urge them to make the necessary approaches to the Egyptian government, and their own governments, for funds to start a full-scale effort to solve the mystery of the pyramids.

A considerable amount of time was required to calculate a satisfactory value for the length of the Gallery. I eventually found that the amount of hollowing-in at the base provided the ,clue. If 57.6 (the amount in inches by which the base is inset) is divided by pi or 3.1415927, the resulting value is 18.334649. The harmonic equivalent of 1833.46 when applied to Gallery length would ensure that the wave-forms set up in the cavity were finely tuned to light frequencies.

10. Preparation for the Next Great Californian Earthquake
Any thinking person who lives near the San Francisco and Los Angeles regions of the San Andreas fault must be con- cerned by the prospect of another major earthquake in the near future, Until very recently it might have been possible to argue - but without very much conviction - that it probably will not happen until we are all dead, so why worry. But we have now seen how inexorably the evidence points to disaster not more than a few years away. What exactly is likely to happen? And how can those who must live in the danger zones prepare for the worst?
It is some comfort to find that government departments and official agencies are aware of the dangers, and are making plans for the most effective possible action when the earth- quake comes. In the case of a really serious earthquake, how- ever, the plans of man seem almost pitifully inadequate. Ironically, too, most attention in this respect has focused on San Francisco, where the memory of the 18 April 1.906 shock remains. In fact, our search extending over the whole of out Solar System indicates that the Los Angeles region is more likely to suffer the next major jerk in the San Andreas fault, because there the fault has been dormant since 1856.
OFFICIAL PREPARATIONS FOR SAN FRANCISCO BAY EARTHQUAKES
The first concern of the authorities in preparing for major earthquakes in California is, of course, to save lives and assist survivors. In a paper presented to the American Asso- ciation for the Advancement of Science in 1974, Drs T. Atwater and P. Molnar of MIT pointed out that the section of the San Andreas fault near San Francisco and to the north does not appear to have slipped substantially since 1906. During the 1906 earthquake the fault moved an average of 4 metres. If the San Andreas is absorbing most of the 5 cm./ year they expect. the potential fpr an earthquake of the same size as in 1906 will have developed after 80 years, i.e. around / Page 122 / 1986 -' a striking independent verdict in view of the pre'dictions made in this book. One of the most detailed plans for such contingency operations was prepared in 1972 by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Environmental Re- search Laboratories, for the Office of Emergency Prepared- ness. Its stated purpose is to provide that Office and the State of California with 'a rational basis for planning earthquake disaster relief and recovery operations in the San Francisco Bay area'. In order to achieve this objective, the report pre- dicts the effects of earthquakes of different magnitudes centred on different parts of the San Andreas and Hayward faults - in fact the Hayward fault, which parallels the San Andrea,s for a short distance just inland from the Bay, is a region of continuing creep and a most unlikely site for really catastrophic jumps, which are caused by the stick-slip motion we looked at in chapter 4. But before any predictions could be made, the NOAA t~ who compiled the report first had to analyse the effects of earthquakes which have occurred in the Bay area in historic times. A quite remarkable discovery emerges from this analysis.
The report itself is not concerned with predicting when or even where great earthquakes will occur. Its role is to create an awareness of ~hat needs to be done, and what it will be possible to do, when the next such quake comes. Even if the NOAA had been concerned with earthquake prediction, they would not have known about the sunspot effect at the time their report was prepared. So their choice of earthquakes as models on which to base their calculations of 'the effects of such disasters is completely independent of the ideas we have developed in this book. Seventeen 'major historical earthquakes' are referred to in the report, all of which - occurred since 1836, and all within about 240 km. of the Golden Gate Bridge. Of these, eight were centred within a radius of 80 km. from the entrance of the Bay. Every one of these eight earthquakes occu"ed within two years of one or another of the date of sunspot maximum given in table 1. This includes the great 1906 earthquake. Information about the activity of 1800 is very scarce, but - it is clear from historical records that shocks occurred con-sistently for 20 days, _often being sufficient to shake the mission and cause the church bells to ring. Cracks appeared in the ground close to the nearby Pajaro River. (this helps to establish the intensity as reaching the range VII in the official NOAA compilation, see table 2 page 124, but that is about all we know for sure.
This evidence, such as it is, does not, of course, have any conclusive bearing on our idea of the planets as triggers of devastating earthquakes. It proves neither that the theory is right or wrong. In -this book, we have presented only the first outline of ideas, which need much more discussion and re- finement; perhaps this evidence, such as it is, indicates that our planetary trigger operates best a few years before the grand alignment, in which case the expected major earth- quake in southern California may. occur even before the end of the present decade. Perhaps the occurrence of such note- worthy. activity in 1800 was entirely; coincidental. We shall never know for sure. But the events certainly provide food for thought and material for dis~ssion; the next time any- pne asks us that awkward question we shall be ready with the answer: 'That's a good question. Have you heard what happened to the mission at San Juan Bautista in October of the year 1800?,!

FOREWORD
"THE STORY of Hans Castorp, which we would here set forth, not on his own account, for in him the reader will make acquaintance with a simple-minded though pleasing young man, but for the sake of the story itself, which seems to us highly worth telling- though it must needs be borne in mind, in Hans Castorp's behalf, that it is his story, and not every story happens to everybody - this story, we say, belongs to the long ago; is already, so to speak, covered with historic mould, and unquestionably to be presented in the tense best suited to a narrative out of the depth of the past.
That should be no drawback to a story, but rather the reverse. Since histories must be in the past, then the more past the better, it would seem, for them in their character as histories, and for him, the teller of them, rounding wizard of times gone by. With this story, moreover, it stands as it does to-day with human beings, not least among them writers of tales: it is far older than its years; its age may not be measured by length of days, nor the weight of time on its head reckoned by the rising or setting of suns. In a word, the degree of its antiquity has noways to do with the pas-sage of time - in which statement the author intentionally touches upon the strange and questionable double nature of that riddling element.
But we would not wilfully obscure a plain matter. The exag-gerated pastness of our narrative is due to its taking place before the epoch when a certain crisis shattered its way through life and consciousness and left a deep chasm behind. It takes place - or, rather, deliberately to avoid the present tense, it took place, and had taken place - in the long ago, in the old days, the days of the world before the Great War, in the beginning of which so much began that has scarcely yet left off beginning. Yes, it took place before that; yet not so long before. Is not the pastness of the past the profounder, the completer, the more legendary, the more im- mediately before the present it falls? More than that, our story has, of its own nature, something of the legend about it now and again. / Page xii / We shall tell it at length, thoroughly, in detail - for when did a narrative seem too long or too short by reason of the actual time or space it took up? We do not fear being called meticulous,in-clining as we do to the view that only the exhaustive can be truly interesting. Sator Formula
The most famous of all magic squares. It has been found inscribed on ancient walls, drinking vessels, etc. It is rec- ommended for finding witches, extinguishing fires, fulfilling wishes, and many other purposes.
The Sator formula (Sator arepo tenet opera rotas) was used throughout the Roman world as early as 200 A. D. At Doura, on the Euphrates, it was painted on a wall in red ink.
It traveled across the western world. The Copts named each of the five nails of the Cross after one of the five verses of the Sator. It was used during the middle ages as a charm, in magical circles, and in esoteric groups. Its literal transla-tion, the object of much misguided speculation, is prac-tically meaningless. Specialists have translated it variously as "The planter is at the plow, the plowing engages the wheels," and "Arepo the sower (planter) carefully guides the wheels."
An esoteric meaning underlies the magical use of the for-mula. Felix Grosser de Chemnitz discovered its occult mean- ing. When the 25 letters of the formula are arranged in the form of a cross marked off by the letters A and 0 (Greek Alpha and Omega), they form the Latin words Pater Noster, the opening words of the prayer known to all Christians and a reminder of the omnipresence of the one who is the "Alpha and Omega" of all things.

It is possible that the Sator formula remained as mute testi-mony of a persecuted faith long after the fish, mysterious initials, cryptograms, doves, and other symbols had ceased to be closely guarded secrets.
